How Medicine Dosages Vary Among Individual Patients
It’s important to pay attention to the packaging label that tells you how much medicine to take and how many hours there are in between dosages. Prescription dosages are developed from several variables such as a patient’s body weight, how much medication their body can absorb, how the medication breaks down (i.e. metabolism), and how quickly the medication passes.1
Taking prescription drugs at their recommended dosages ensures that their active ingredients remain consistent, giving the patient minimal side effects.1 If a patient stops taking medication through the recommended duration as prescribed, for example, an illness or bacterial infection could progress.1 In addition, taking too much of certain medications can also cause adverse health impacts or become life-threatening.1
Some examples of taking medicines incorrectly can include:2
- Taking prescriptions with different names that share the same active ingredients
- Chewing non-chewable medications
- Cutting up pills that should be taken whole (i.e. doubling up dosages)
- Missing recommended dosages
Potential Adverse Reactions to Acetaminophen
The active ingredient in most Theraflu products, acetaminophen, is a common and effective over-the-counter (OTC) medicine that acts as a fever reducer and as a reliever for headache pain, muscle aches, colds and sore throats.3 While it is highly effective, it also may incur side effects. Some side effects can be serious, such as:3
- red, peeling or blistering skin
- rash or hives
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- hoarseness
- itchiness
If any of these symptoms occur, stop taking acetaminophen and get medical attention from your doctor or healthcare provider.3
What Is the Correct Dosage of Theraflu?
Theraflu products come in different strengths and formulations. Theraflu-D cough syrups, for example, contain 1,000 mg of acetaminophen and are the only flu relief syrups available with pseudoephedrine to provide powerful relief.
For adults and those over 12 years old, most Theraflu products are best taken every 6 hours, while symptoms persist. You should not take more than 3 doses (totaling 90 mL) in 24 hours unless directed by a doctor. Theraflu products that come in liquid form should have their doses measured correctly using the enclosed dosing cup, and Theraflu liquid powders should be taken one packet at a time in 8 oz. of hot water. As always, you should follow the directions provided on the product label.
Exceeding the recommended dose of acetaminophen can increase the risk of liver damage.2 Severe liver damage may occur if you:
- Take more than 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours
- Use Theraflu with other medicines containing acetaminophen as it may be difficult to calculate the amount of acetaminophen you are taking
- Have three or more alcoholic drinks a day while taking products that contain acetaminophen, like Theraflu
If you suspect that you have ingested more than the normal or recommended dosage of Theraflu, seek medical help or contact the Poison Control Center immediately.
Following the individual dosage instructions can increase the chances of getting better. When taken effectively, Theraflu can help deliver strong, fast and comprehensive relief from your cold and flu symptoms. Always be sure to adhere to the product label for recommended dosages and usage and be sure to consult Theraflu’s Frequently Asked Questions for vital information that can help you on your way to recovery.
